The goal when designing Xperia Z2 Tablet was to improve the design of its predecessor, Xperia Z Tablet. We wanted to simplify the overall design, make the device thinner and lighter and add a more solid feeling.
We created a perfectly symmetrical device that feels comfortable and lightweight in your hand no matter in which direction you hold it. To achieve a very slim body, we reduced the number of parts in the hardware design.
The backside of the device is made of a very thin sheet of high-grade fiberglass and by moulding that straight into the frame of the tablet we created a seamless frame structure without any split between the side and rear panel. This solution not only made the device more rigid, it also added a more premium look to the design.

My role as lead hardware designer was bringing this product to market with as little compromise to our design intent as possible and with the idea of a solid design visible in the final product. This included many rounds of hard work together with both engineering and manufacturing specialists.
Thanks to a great teamwork between designers and engineering team this product was a design success and we finally got the IF Gold award for this product.
